Ever wonder what it’s like to walk into a store or mall and be greeted by all-glass doors? Inside Edition found two women who were willing to find out.
The doors are made of ‘special’ tempered glass, designed to shatter into small pieces if shattered. The problem with all glass doors is that there is nothing but air between the inside of the building and the outside world. This means that anyone can come rushing in without warning.
All this talk about people running through tempered glass has me worried about my apartment’s front door. I’ve got one of those frameless clear tempered-glass types, and it looks like it wouldn’t hamper someone too much if they wanted to bust their way (as long as they had a decent running start).
You might want to consider getting a multi-point locking system. This is often an option on sliding glass doors and French patio doors. It can be costly and does require some installation, but it will make the door much more secure. One of these systems could easily cost upwards of $300 or more (not including installation costs), which you may not find worthwhile for such a door – especially if it’s just your front door. However, those living in large cities where break-ins are common would likely be worth investigating as they offer peace of mind.
Try leaving a chair behind the bottom corner of the door so that it is half in, half out. If someone tries to get in, they will either hit the chair or knock it over and alert you.
This option could work; I’d say give it a shot. You can permanently remove the chair if you find yourself tripping over it all the time!
It’s also not recommended to use magnetic locks on frameless glass doors because to anyone on the other side of the entry (e.g., thieves), they could easily break through them by simply attaching magnets to either side of your door (this is one-way see-through glass doors are often breached). It’s like leaving your front door completely unlocked when you leave for work every day.
When trying to stop someone from busting their way through a glass door, you’re going to want something powerful. Unfortunately, magnets aren’t going to cut it, and you’ll want to look into getting locks with metal bars (or similar secure locking mechanisms) built-in. These will make your apartment much more confident and will likely require little-to-no installation on your part.
Are depressing the levers on either side of the door before closing would be an easy addition to help people feel safe when they leave their homes each day. Glass doors have been popular for a while now. Still, their popularity seems to be increasing with the passing years. Glass doors are being chosen more and more often in households or even businesses that want to add a touch of elegance and style to them.
I agree! If someone wants to break into your house, they probably will be able to. The levers are a good idea in theory because it makes the doors much more difficult to push open by accident, but I’d say if you’re home alone, leave them closed and locked.
